Chelsea Football Club has announced the signing of Valentin Barco, a 22-year-old Argentine player, on a seven-year contract. Barco joins the London-based club from their affiliate, Strasbourg.
Barco, who possesses the versatility to play in midfield and at left-back, previously played for Boca Juniors before moving to Brighton & Hove Albion in 2024. He spent time on loan at Sevilla and then Strasbourg, making a permanent switch to the French club in February 2025. He was a regular starter for Strasbourg, contributing to their qualification for European football and recording 12 goals and assists last season, which earned him a place in Argentina's World Cup squad.
Last month, Barco drew attention for his actions during Argentina's World Cup semi-final victory over England. He was seen sprinting across the pitch and appearing to taunt England players after Enzo Fernandez scored a late equalizer. John Stones reacted by shoving him, and Barco also entered the pitch again after Lautaro Martinez scored the winning goal. Reports indicated he had been provoking the England bench throughout the match. Following the final whistle, Jude Bellingham gave Barco a slap on the back of the head amidst the Argentinian celebration.
Due to his involvement in the World Cup, Barco will join his new Chelsea teammates later in the preseason. He made his professional debut for Boca Juniors at the age of 16.
