Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke died in May from the effects of heroin and cocaine, authorities announced Friday. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner determined the 29-year-old basketball player’s death was accidental.

Clarke was found deceased inside a Los Angeles-area home on May 11. A person familiar with the investigation, who spoke on condition of anonymity as details had not been publicly released, had previously told The Associated Press that drug paraphernalia was discovered at the residence. This information emerged after the Grizzlies announced Clarke’s passing.

Clarke was under contract with the Grizzlies through the 2026-27 season. Approximately six weeks prior to his death, he was arrested in Arkansas on charges including speeding, reckless driving, and possession of a controlled substance. Clarke had spent all seven of his professional seasons with Memphis after concluding his college career at Gonzaga.
