The cause of death for Buffalo Bills defensive lineman Ed Oliver's 2-year-old son has been revealed as drowning. The tragic incident occurred in a swimming pool at the family's Texas home nearly two months ago.
Officials responded to a life-in-danger call at Oliver's residence on June 28. First responders were informed that Oliver and his wife discovered their son unresponsive in the pool. The toddler was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Oliver, 28, was reportedly seen speaking with officials outside his home and was visibly distressed. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is ongoing.
News of the child's death initially surfaced Saturday morning. A source close to Oliver stated he was requesting privacy and prayers during this difficult time.
The Buffalo Bills organization released a statement expressing condolences to Oliver and his family. "It’s an unthinkable tragedy for any parent," said Bills general manager Brandon Beane. "We will continue to support Ed and his family as we all grieve this tragic loss."
Oliver, a key member of Buffalo's defense since being drafted with the No. 9 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, had been participating in training camp practices prior to this news. First-year coach Joe Brady had previously stated Oliver missed a joint practice with the Browns due to an unspecified injury.
