Canada has advanced to the next round of the World Cup after defeating South Africa in their Round of 32 match. The game took place in Los Angeles, marking the first time a World Cup co-host nation has played a knockout stage game outside its own borders.

Canada secured their spot in the knockout stage after drawing with Switzerland in their final group game. However, a 2-1 loss to Switzerland meant Canada had to travel to Los Angeles for their Round of 32 contest. This marks Canada's first appearance in a World Cup elimination round since their previous two participations in 1986 and 2022.

During the match against South Africa, Canada appeared to outclass their opponents, registering double the number of shots. In the first half, a header by Moïse Bombito was cleared off the line by South African defender Aubrey Modiba. The rebound was collected by Canada's Tajon Buchanan, whose subsequent shot was saved by South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Shortly after, Canada was denied a penalty opportunity following a challenge on Richie Laryea. Canada's coach, Jesse Marsch, was visibly animated throughout the first half, requiring restraint from his players to avoid further confrontation with officials.

The World Cup knockout stage features win-or-go-home games played consecutively for 10 days, beginning with Canada's victory. The tournament is co-hosted by Canada and is now entering its decisive phase.
