During a recent New York Giants training camp practice, veteran wide receiver Calvin Austin III has become a reliable target for the team's quarterbacks, earning the moniker of their "safety blanket." This development comes as rookie wide receiver Malachi Fields continues to showcase his big-play ability on a daily basis.

Fields demonstrated his potential with a notable sideline catch over cornerback Paulson Adebo during a 7-on-7 drill. He also proved effective running slant routes. Another receiver, Dalen Cambre, contributed with an acrobatic catch where he secured the ball despite defensive pressure.

The team's training camp, held in a rain-soaked environment, saw quarterback Jameis Winston complete 8 of 21 passes. Winston also missed an opportunity on a short-yardage fourth down and narrowly avoided an interception when cornerback Deonte Banks dropped a catchable ball. The presence of a veteran quarterback like Winston is seen as valuable for evaluating other players on the second team.

On the defensive side, coordinator Dennard Wilson has implemented a push-up penalty system, where the defense performs 10 push-ups for every penalty committed. On Monday, this resulted in 40 push-ups. However, veteran defensive tackle D.J. Reader suggested a modification: deducting 10 push-ups for each turnover. This was highlighted by interceptions from Jevon Holland and Micah McFadden.

Cornerback Colton Hood briefly left an active practice with what appeared to be a stinger but returned after being evaluated by trainers. He later committed a holding penalty on a fourth down.
