Bryson DeChambeau was assessed a two-stroke penalty for trampling fescue to improve his lie on the fifth hole during the second round of The Open Championship. The infraction occurred after DeChambeau had posted a 4-under-par 66, putting him one stroke off the lead.

Following the ruling, DeChambeau's odds on DraftKings were temporarily removed before reappearing at +980. His continued participation in the tournament is uncertain, as his agent stated he would decide in the morning whether to proceed. DeChambeau currently sits at 5-under overall, four strokes behind the new leader, Lucas Herbert.

Herbert claimed the lead with an 8-under-par 62 on Friday, a round that tied the lowest single-round score in major championship history. Herbert narrowly missed a chance to hold the record outright after a closing bogey, but he holds a two-stroke lead over Jackson Suber, Cameron Young, and Ryan Gerard.

Sam Burns also carded a 62, matching Herbert's round and placing him tied for fourth. This remarkable turnaround followed a 3-over 73 in the opening round. Herbert's odds to win the British Open are now listed at +950, making him the third favorite.

Five other players have previously shot 62 in a major, most recently Xander Schauffele and Shane Lowry at the 2024 PGA Championship. Despite the scoring surges, Scottie Scheffler remains the favorite to win the tournament at +580 odds. He heads into Saturday's play tied for eighth place, four strokes behind the leader, after a second-round 68. Scheffler reportedly struggled with his putting early in his round before improving on the back nine.

Cameron Young gained ground, now listed at +650 odds after consecutive rounds of 3-under-par 67. Jon Rahm is among eight players tied with Scheffler at T8, also finishing with a 3-under 67. Rahm received a third conduct ruling on Friday for throwing his club after a poor tee shot on the 15th hole. A subsequent violation would incur a two-stroke penalty, and a third would lead to disqualification.

Rory McIlroy recovered with a 3-under 67 to make the weekend cut but remains seven strokes off the lead at 1-under overall, needing a strong performance in the third round to contend for his second Claret Jug.
