Cameron Norrie was among six British players to lose on the opening day of Wimbledon, marking a disappointing start for home interest in the Grand Slam tournament.
Harriet Dart came close to a comeback victory but was ultimately defeated by former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. Their match, originally scheduled for Court 17, was moved to Court One following Emma Raducanu's withdrawal. Dart, a wildcard entry, engaged the world number 31 in an entertaining two-and-a-half-hour match on the show court, forcing a deciding set before falling 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Ostapenko is set to face either Antonia Ruzic of Croatia or Darja Semenistaja, a lucky loser who entered the draw after Raducanu's withdrawal. In another early exit, 17-year-old British wildcard Mika Stojsavljevic lost decisively to 2021 Olympic champion and 11th seed Belinda Bencic, with a score of 6-2, 6-1.
Felix Gill and Max Basing were also eliminated in their Grand Slam main-draw debuts. Gill lost to the 23rd seed Rafael Jodar, while Basing was defeated by qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki. Alicia Dudeney, also making her major tournament debut, lost her match 6-3, 6-3 to American Alycia Parks.
With these early departures, the remaining hopes for British success on the opening day rested on teenager Hannah Klugman, Mimi Xu, Francesca Jones, Oliver Tarvet, and Jack Pinnington Jones. The tournament features 21 British players across both singles draws, though many face challenging opening-round matches against opponents ranked within the world's top 55.
