Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler has triggered speculation among fans and media regarding a potential second hair transplant due to a significantly altered appearance. The 33-year-old German coach was observed with a shaved head on the touchline during Brighton's pre-season friendly match against Roma at the Amex Stadium.
This new look stands in stark contrast to the fuller head of hair Hurzeler sported at the end of the Premier League season in May. He had also been seen with a shaved head over the summer while attending the World Cup as a pundit.
Brighton supporters have actively discussed Hurzeler's hair in the build-up to the upcoming Premier League season. Many expressed conviction that he has undergone a hair transplant procedure. "Couldn't even focus on what the coach said, his head," one fan commented on a post-match interview clip. Another supporter wrote, "I'm sorry Fab but your hair distracted me."
"He's previously been open about having had one [a transplant] done, maybe he needed a top," a third fan suggested, implying a possible follow-up procedure. One fan claimed, "He's had a previous hair transplant which probably didn't give him the density he wanted so had been using hair fibres to 'thicken' his hair up. Probably now decided to get another hair transplant."
Hurzeler himself previously alluded to having had a hair transplant, joking about comparisons to former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp during his first season at Brighton. In a 2024 interview with BILD, Hurzeler stated, "In England I'm already being compared to Jurgen – which we can leave alone because he was much more successful and had a unique career. The only comparison that fits is that we both had our hair enhanced a bit."
Hurzeler's hair had drawn attention from Brighton fans even before his appointment as manager in 2024, with some making comparisons to the character Lloyd Christmas from the film 'Dumb and Dumber'.
On the pitch, Brighton secured a 3-0 victory over Roma in the friendly. Georginio Rutter opened the scoring, followed by two goals from Yasin Ayari. New signings Luka Vuskovic, Costinha, and Zadoc Yohanna were involved in the match, though Brighton experienced a scare when Yankuba Minteh was substituted due to injury.
Reflecting on the game, Hurzeler commented, "We took it quite seriously. I think also Roma took it quite seriously. In their pressing, we could see that they had really analysed us and they tried to make it difficult for us. But overall, I think we brought a lot of energy and intensity on the pitch. We controlled the game with a good structure. In possession, we scored goals, we defended well, so overall it was a good performance."
