Buffalo Bills fans are expressing outrage over the steep ticket prices for games at the newly constructed Highmark Stadium, with the cheapest seats for the home opener reportedly costing around $660. This price point has sparked frustration among the fanbase, often referred to as the "Bills Mafia," many of whom are contributing to the stadium's $2.1 billion cost through state and county taxes.
Fans noted that the price for the September 17th game against the Detroit Lions is significantly higher than in the past. For comparison, tickets at the previous Highmark Stadium were typically around $200. The surge in prices has led to criticism directed at team owner Terry Pegula.
"Billionaire businessman Terry Pegula got it all worked out," one fan wrote on social media platform X. "The cheapest ticket is $700. That would be 3X the old price. He still makes a profit per game with empty seats. We love the #BILLS but hate that profit margin."
Many fans travel long distances, including from southern Ontario, Rochester, and Erie, Pennsylvania, to attend games. Increased ticket prices, coupled with rising gas costs, could make attending games prohibitive for some.
Ticket resellers attribute the high prices to increased demand. Nick Giammusso of VIPTix stated that the new stadium, the team's strong performance—including five consecutive AFC East titles—and the popularity of star quarterback Josh Allen contribute to the elevated costs. Games against rivals like the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots also fetch higher prices.
Pre-season games offer a more affordable option, with tickets for the opener against the Carolina Panthers reportedly costing around $130. A game against the Pittsburgh Steelers during the pre-season was listed at approximately $100.
The new Highmark Stadium features a covered canopy over more than half the seats and a hydronic heating system designed to melt snow and ice, addressing the region's harsh winter climate. The team also recently acquired wide receiver DJ Moore in a trade with the Chicago Bears, adding to the anticipation for the upcoming season.
