Milwaukee, WI – A defensive miscue by Brett Baty in right field in the second inning led to two runs and contributed to the New York Mets' 4-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday. The loss concluded the Mets' road trip with a 3-3 record.
Baty, who has seen action at four different positions this season, was playing right field on Wednesday to provide another left-handed bat in the lineup while Juan Soto rested. However, his route to Joey Ortiz's fly ball in the second inning was indirect, allowing the ball to land for a two-run triple and putting the Mets in a position to play catch-up for the remainder of the game.
Christian Scott, making his shortest start of the season, lasted only 3 ⅔ innings, surrendering three earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six. Scott has struggled with length recently, failing to complete five innings in four of his last six starts, despite coming off two consecutive scoreless outings.
The Mets' lone run in the second inning came from Marcus Semien's two-out home run. It was a rare offensive contribution from Semien, who entered the day with a .594 OPS and had struggled since returning from a three-week stint on the injured list with a left hip flexor strain.
Baty's misplay in the second inning allowed the Brewers to take a 3-1 lead. After Scott walked Garrett Mitchell and allowed a single to Andrew Vaughn, Ortiz's fly ball to right field should have been the third out. Instead, it resulted in two runs scoring, with Christian Yelich adding a single for the Brewers' third run.
Baty did contribute offensively with a solo home run in the fifth inning, his third in eight games and one that pulled the Mets within 3-2. However, Christian Yelich extended the Brewers' lead to 4-2 in the sixth with an RBI triple against A.J. Minter. Francisco Alvarez brought the Mets closer in the ninth with an RBI single, making the final score 4-3.
