USMNT forward Folarin Balogun's red card suspension was altered to a one-year probationary period, a disciplinary measure that follows a precedent established by Cristiano Ronaldo during the World Cup. FIFA cited Article 27 of its disciplinary code, which permits judicial bodies to "fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure."

This ruling means Balogun will avoid missing additional matches, provided he does not commit a similar offense during his probationary period. If he were to incur another infraction, his suspended ban would be enforced without prejudice to any new sanctions.

Balogun received a red card during the U.S. men's national team's Round of 32 match after VAR review determined his foot connected with the ankle area of Bosnia's Tarik Muharemovic. He had already scored the U.S.'s opening goal in that match.

Ronaldo previously benefited from a similar ruling following an incident in November 2025. The Portuguese star received his first international red card for an elbow that connected with an opponent during a match against the Republic of Ireland. His original three-match ban was modified, allowing him to miss only his country's final qualifying match and be available for their World Cup opener. Similar to Balogun's case, Ronaldo's probation stipulated that any new infringement would result in the enforcement of the remaining suspension plus additional sanctions.

Balogun expressed a range of emotions regarding the red card incident, stating, "There’s been lots of different emotions. I’ve been upset, I’ve been happy, it’s been surreal to be honest." He emphasized the importance of maintaining composure and demonstrating the correct way to handle perceived injustices, especially for young fans. "We have to show them the correct way to handle things even when you think it’s unjust, so I felt I did that," Balogun said.

The U.S. men's national team, with Balogun's availability for the Round of 16 match against Belgium, received a significant boost. Balogun has scored three goals in his World Cup debut.

There remains a possibility of a quarterfinal matchup between Portugal and the USMNT, dependent on Portugal's performance against Spain.
