Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have agreed to a three-year contract extension worth $165 million, according to multiple reports Tuesday. The deal officially ends a contract saga that had been a focal point during the team's training camp.
The agreement comes just days before the Buccaneers are set to begin their regular season on Sunday, securing Mayfield's future with the team. Talks between Mayfield and the Buccaneers had previously broken off as training camp commenced, but both sides worked to reach an agreement with the Week 1 matchup approaching.
Mayfield, 31, has played for the Buccaneers for the past three seasons. During his tenure, he has guided the team to a 27-24 record and two playoff appearances. His decision to sign an extension means the former No. 1 overall draft pick will not enter free agency.
