A 27-year-old Australian rules football player is in critical condition after a collision during a match at Lalor Recreation Reserve in Melbourne's north. Nathan Fitzgerald, a teacher at Mernda Central College, suffered severe head injuries on Saturday while attempting a tackle.
Epping Football Netball Club president Luke De Vincentis stated that Fitzgerald sustained multiple head knocks before falling and hitting his head on the covered cricket pitch at the multi-purpose venue. De Vincentis noted that while the pitch was covered, it remained "substantially harder" than the surrounding oval. He expressed concerns about the safety implications of cricket pitches on football ovals and suggested that the covering methods for these pitches should be reviewed.
On Sunday, the Epping Football Netball Club released a statement acknowledging Fitzgerald's deteriorating condition and that he was receiving end-of-life care. The club conveyed that the Fitzgerald family is in their thoughts and requested privacy during this difficult time. De Vincentis described the incident as "incomprehensible" and commended the swift actions of medical personnel and emergency services, stating that their rapid response likely extended Fitzgerald's life, allowing family and friends time to visit.
Fitzgerald joined Mernda Central College as a maths and science teacher in 2023. The City of Whittlesea, which manages the Lalor Recreation Reserve, has been contacted for comment.
