Ashley Cole has concluded his tenure as head coach of Italian second-tier club Cesena, departing just three months after taking up the position. The 45-year-old former Chelsea and Arsenal defender was appointed to his first managerial role in March.
During his time with the Serie B outfit, Cole oversaw eight matches, securing one victory. The team finished 11th in the league, with their hopes of a play-off position faltering. Reports at the time of his appointment indicated that Cole needed to meet certain conditions to secure a new contract, and his arrival had coincided with fan dissatisfaction over the dismissal of his predecessor, Michele Mignani.
Cole stated on Instagram that he had decided to pursue a new opportunity. "As my tenure at Cesena FC concludes today, I want to thank the players and staff for their hard work and commitment over the last few months," he wrote. "I was proud to bring my experience to such a passionate club, and I’ve truly enjoyed working with the squad to introduce a new identity and prepare for the season ahead."
He further explained his decision: "Following recent discussions with the Sporting Director regarding a change in the club’s strategy, I have decided that it is best for me to move on. I leave with great respect for all the people there, as well as the fans, and look forward to my next challenge."
Since retiring as a player in 2019, Cole has held various coaching positions. He most recently served as a full-time national coach with the Football Association. His coaching experience also includes assistant roles under Frank Lampard at Everton and Chelsea, and a similar position at Birmingham City during Wayne Rooney's management. Cole also worked with the England U21 national team and assisted the senior squad under Lee Carsley.
As a player, Cole amassed over 700 appearances before concluding his career with Derby County. His decorated playing career included winning the Champions League and a Premier League title with Chelsea, alongside four FA Cups. He also won the Europa League, League Cup, and Community Shield with the Blues. Cole began his senior career at Arsenal, where he won two Premier League titles, three FA Cups, and two Community Shields. He previously played in Italy for AS Roma for two seasons before joining LA Galaxy and later finishing his playing career in England.
