Australian women's cricket vice-captain Ash Gardner has publicly addressed the collapse of her marriage and allegations of an affair with a younger teammate. In a statement posted to Instagram on Thursday evening, Gardner acknowledged that her relationship status required clarification from Cricket Australia (CA) due to her leadership role. She expressed gratitude for the CA Board's continued support of her leadership position and her commitment to supporting her teammates.
Gardner also offered an apology to her ex-wife, Monica Wright, for any pain caused by the separation and wished her well. She stated that she would not be making further public comments on the matter and requested privacy for all involved.
Wright had previously spoken out, calling for Gardner to be stripped of her leadership roles. Wright alleged that Gardner had an affair with 22-year-old teammate Georgia Voll during the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup in India last year, shortly after Gardner and Wright married in April 2025. Wright questioned Cricket Australia's response, suggesting the situation would have been handled differently if it involved male players, citing the past removal of Shane Warne as vice-captain for sending explicit messages.
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg commented on the situation, stating that while relationships are a personal matter, the organization would implement "additional guardrails" to manage potential conflicts of interest, particularly concerning team selections. Greenberg acknowledged the "perception" of conflict that such relationships could create.
Gardner, who is also the captain of the Sydney Sixers in the Women's Big Bash League, was appointed co-vice-captain of the Australian women's team on January 28, alongside Tahlia McGrath. According to reports, tensions arose during the World Cup in India when Wright visited Gardner, with a team source describing an "awkwardness" and a sense that "something was a little bit off with Ash." After returning to Sydney, Gardner reportedly disclosed to Wright the reasons for her behavior, which left Wright "shattered" and "distraught," marking the end of their marriage.
