Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo sustained a head injury after being hit by a line drive from his teammate Ketel Marte on Sunday. The incident occurred in the third inning of the game against the Houston Astros, which the Diamondbacks won.
Perdomo singled to begin the third inning. As he advanced to second base, Marte hit a 93mph line drive that struck Perdomo on the side of his helmet. The 26-year-old player immediately fell to the ground in pain, prompting players from both teams to check on him.
Trainers attended to Perdomo, who remained on the ground for several minutes before sitting up. He spoke with trainers and was able to walk off the field under his own power.
Manager Torey Lovullo described the moment as terrifying. "When you go out there and you see him laying on the ground, there's a lot of uncertainty for everybody, and then there's some fear, like is he going to be OK?" Lovullo said. He expressed relief when he learned Perdomo had not lost consciousness.
Lovullo stated that Perdomo was a little dizzy immediately after the impact, but all medical tests were negative. The manager anticipates Perdomo will be available to return to the lineup on Monday. He also noted that Marte was visibly upset by the incident but felt better after seeing Perdomo postgame, with the two players embracing.
Ildemaro Vargas replaced Perdomo at shortstop, and Tim Tawa entered the game at first base.
