Soccer teams throughout Argentina plan to honor Lionel Messi with a minute of applause during the 10-minute mark of their upcoming matches. This tribute follows his recent decision to retire from international duty after a 21-year career with the national team.

The Argentine Football Association announced Wednesday that the gesture will occur in the next round of the Clausura tournament, as well as in other men's and women's leagues. The timing acknowledges Messi's significant contributions as he steps away from representing his country.

Messi, who wore the iconic No. 10 jersey, announced his retirement from international play on Monday. During his tenure, he led Argentina to a World Cup title in 2022 and appeared in two other World Cup finals. He holds national records for appearances with 207 and goals scored with 125.

Regarded by many as the greatest player of all time, Messi has never played professionally in his native Argentina. He moved to Barcelona at age 13 to begin his storied career. He continues to play at the club level for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.
