Texas quarterback Arch Manning enters his redshirt junior season with significant attention, aiming to become a top prospect for the 2027 NFL Draft. Despite his talent and family legacy, his path to being the No. 1 overall pick requires improvement in specific areas, according to analysts.

Refining the Quick Game

Manning's accuracy on shorter throws was a noted concern last season. The quick game, which includes slants, bubble screens, and pop passes, is crucial in modern football for efficiently getting the ball away from immediate pass rushes. While Manning possesses a quick release, his technique on these throws was inconsistent, often involving issues with coordinating his upper and lower body and a sloppy sidearm release. This led to inaccurate passes and contributed to a high number of receiver drops. Although he showed improvement as the season progressed, further refinement is necessary.

Working Through Progressions

Another area for development is Manning's ability to work through his progressions and read the entire field. He was often observed staring down his primary target, which led to passes being batted down at the line of scrimmage. Pro Football Focus data indicated that Manning had 10 passes batted down last year, a figure comparable to other first-year starters. While offensive line play and play-calling contribute, Manning's tendency to telegraph throws allowed defenders to time their leaps and disrupt plays. For NFL consideration as a top pick, he needs to demonstrate a consistent ability to scan the field and move to secondary and tertiary options while protecting the ball. Winning Performance, Especially on the Road

NFL teams place significant value on a quarterback's ability to lead his team to victory, particularly in crucial moments. Manning's performance in losses last season, which occurred on the road, showed a dip in completion percentage and a less favorable touchdown-to-interception ratio compared to his other starts. In contrast, successful quarterbacks often elevate their teams regardless of the opponent or venue. With only three regular-season road games scheduled for Texas this fall, Manning's performance in select away contests and against other highly ranked opponents will be critical. His ability to perform under pressure and lead the Longhorns, who aim for their first national title in 21 years, will significantly influence his draft standing.
