Andruw Jones, a celebrated center fielder and one of the greatest defensive players in Major League Baseball history, was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, becoming the first player from Curaçao to receive the honor.
During his induction speech, Jones acknowledged the significance of his achievement for his home island, stating, "When I made it in Atlanta, I knew I could inspire a lot of people from Curaçao to reach the major leagues." He specifically thanked Hensley "Bam Bam" Meulens, who was the first native of Curaçao to play in MLB, for paving the way for future generations. " 'Bam Bam' opened the door for many others to chase their dream of being a professional," Jones said.
Jones highlighted the success of several other MLB players from the Dutch Caribbean island, including Ozzie Albies, Jurickson Profar, Jonathan Schoop, Andrelton Simmons, and Kenley Jansen, underscoring the growing talent pool from the region.
His induction marks a culmination of a 17-year career, which included a decorated tenure with the Atlanta Braves from 1996 to 2007. Jones was introduced by fellow Hall of Famer John Smoltz, and notable former teammates Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and Chipper Jones were in attendance.
A significant portion of Jones' speech was dedicated to his former manager, the late Bobby Cox, who passed away in May at the age of 84. "Nobody in the Braves organization had a bigger impact on me than manager Bobby Cox," Jones stated. "He put a 19-year-old in the World Series in the lineup and believed in me." Jones recalled Cox's confidence and his role in helping him develop into the best player he could be, emphasizing Cox's principles of playing hard, playing to win, and giving an honest effort.
Jones, who was a powerful hitter in addition to his exceptional defense, also thanked Joe Torre and Joe Girardi, managers he played for later in his career with the Dodgers and Yankees, respectively. He made his World Series debut at 19, homering in his first two Fall Classic at-bats against the New York Yankees, becoming the youngest player to achieve this feat.
