Anders Lee, captain of the New York Islanders, is heading to the NHL free agency market, according to TSN. This move comes despite the Islanders increasing their offer. While remaining an option, Lee is reportedly set to explore opportunities with other teams.
Lee's potential departure marks the conclusion of a 14-year affiliation with the Islanders that began in 2009 when he was a sixth-round draft pick. He made his NHL debut three years later and assumed the captaincy in 2018.
Islanders General Manager Mathieu Darche acknowledged the ongoing discussions, stating on Friday, "We'll see" and that he was still in communication with Lee's agent, Neil Sheehy. Darche added, "We'll see what happens in the next three days."
If Lee signs with another team, it will present the Islanders with a significant challenge as they enter free agency. The team will need to address the void left by their captain, a reality check that will likely dominate discussions leading up to training camp. This decision also leaves lingering questions about the team's playoff performance; Lee and the Islanders reached the Eastern Conference Finals six years ago but have not won a playoff series since.
Lee is also set to finish his tenure with the Islanders just 77 games shy of becoming the fourth player in franchise history to skate in 1,000 games with the team. He concluded the 2025-26 season with 19 goals and 42 points.
