The 2026 U.S. Open presents a significant opportunity for American men to end a 23-year Grand Slam title drought, as several top contenders have been eliminated from the tournament.

Third-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime became the latest high-profile casualty, falling to Karen Khachanov in a decisive second-round match. This exit, alongside earlier departures of top players like Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic, has seemingly opened the door for the remaining American contingent.

Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, and Alex Michelsen are among the top 20 men still competing. Fritz, who reached the US Open final two years ago, acknowledged the shifting landscape but stressed a match-by-match approach.

"Obviously it’s a good opportunity for the Americans," Fritz said. "Not because the draw is opening, just because there’s a lot of guys that are at that level and can play at that level."

He added that the potential for an easier path only becomes relevant deep in the tournament. "I need to worry about getting myself to that point before I start putting extra pressure on myself, like ‘it’s more open, I have more of a chance.’ Because the rest of the tournament, up until that point, it’s the same as it always is."

Auger-Aliassime cited an abnormal physical issue for his premature exit, stating he became dizzy and saw spots during his match against Khachanov. "After a set and a half, I just couldn’t feel well and was dizzy and seeing spots, and couldn’t recover," he said. "I thought maybe it would pass, but it didn’t. … So that’s the end of the tournament for me."

Fritz advanced by defeating Mattia Bellucci with a score of 6-0, 6-1, 6-1. He is slated to face Francisco Cerundolo next, with a potential quarterfinal match against fellow American Learner Tien.

Shelton, Tiafoe, Paul, and Michelsen have all secured spots in the Round of 32. Tien, Zachary Svajda, and wild card Michael Zheng also remain in contention.

The last time American men won multiple Grand Slam titles in a single year was 2003, with Andre Agassi winning the Australian Open and Andy Roddick capturing the U.S. Open.

Frances Tiafoe had previously commented on the competition, noting, "Still got to beat seven guys however you slice it. Carlos [Alcaraz] is still playing … a lot of good players."

However, with the withdrawals and early exits of key international players, the path for the American men has become less congested as the tournament progresses.
