Managers for Algeria and Austria have refuted suggestions of a contrived draw following their teams' dramatic 3-3 World Cup match, arguing the unpredictable final minutes demonstrated the game's genuine uncertainty. The result has drawn comparisons to the infamous 'Disgrace of Gijon' match from the 1982 World Cup, a historical event that has shadowed both nations for decades.
Austria's coach, Ralf Rangnick, described the idea of a pre-arranged draw as "mad," emphasizing that the chaotic final stages of the game clearly indicated neither side was seeking a specific outcome. "In this match, when you have a 3-3, nobody can assume that it was an agreement, especially after what we saw during the last 90 seconds," Rangnick stated. He added that he could not recall a match with such a dramatic and unexpected trajectory in his nearly 40 years of coaching, likening its dramatic course to a plot by Alfred Hitchcock.
Algeria's manager, Vladimir Petkovic, also dismissed any notion of an arrangement. "I'm extremely happy that, at the end, it was football that won, that prevailed – 3-3 as a score says it all," Petkovic commented.
Following this result, Austria is set to face Spain in the last 32 round on Thursday, July 2, in Los Angeles. Algeria will play Switzerland in Vancouver on Friday, July 3.
