Former U.S. soccer player and analyst Alexi Lalas has criticized the Argentinian national team for their conduct following their loss to Spain in the World Cup Final. Lalas described the team's decision to skip mandatory postgame media interviews as "weak."
After the 1-0 defeat to Spain at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, several Argentinian players, including captain Lionel Messi, reportedly bypassed interviews and proceeded directly to their team bus. This action is contrary to FIFA regulations, which require players to be available to the media after matches. Consequently, Argentina is likely to face a fine.
The match concluded with a physical altercation between players from both teams, a scene that Lalas suggested may have stemmed from lingering tensions. Defensive midfielder Leandro Paredes was involved in a shoving match with Spanish player Eric Garcia and was shown a red card. This incident occurred shortly after the final whistle, when teams are expected to engage in customary handshakes.
Argentina also faced disciplinary actions during the game. Star defender Enzo Fernández received his second yellow card of the match, resulting in his ejection and forcing the team to play with ten men for the entirety of extra time.
Lionel Messi was visibly emotional after what is presumed to be his final World Cup appearance. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni expressed pride in Messi's achievements, calling him "the best football player ever stepping foot on a pitch."
