Alek Thomas made his Los Angeles Dodgers debut over the weekend, capping a period of significant change for the outfielder and his wife, Kailey McCaffrey. McCaffrey shared her surprise on social media, writing "didn’t have this on my 2026 bingo card" in reference to the recent turn of events.
Thomas, 26, was traded to the Dodgers organization in May. He began his tenure with the club in the minor leagues, providing depth at center field. His opportunity with the major league team arose when Dodgers outfielder Andy Pages sustained a fractured left hand during a series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Thomas was subsequently called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City to replace Pages on the roster. Since joining the Dodgers, Thomas has recorded a hit and an RBI in each of the three games he has played. He offers the team a left-handed bat and a pinch-running option, particularly while Pages is sidelined.
Thomas was originally a second-round pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2018 MLB Draft. He spent parts of five seasons with Arizona, recording 31 home runs and a .634 OPS with a .230 batting average. His departure from the Diamondbacks was described as difficult by his former manager, Torey Lovullo.
"It’s part of the game, and I think Alek understands that, but it’s hard to say goodbye to him and his wife, Kailey," Lovullo said in May. "They’re great people. We’ve known them. We’ve watched them grow up. We watch them get engaged and get married, and when you have to say goodbye to them that’s painful."
