Carlos Alcaraz, Frances Tiafoe, and Alex Michelsen have advanced to the quarter-finals of the US Open, increasing the American presence in the latter stages of the tournament. The development fuels hopes of a first American men's Grand Slam champion since Andy Roddick in 2003.
Alcaraz secured his place in the final eight with a significant victory over Tommy Paul. Meanwhile, Tiafoe delighted the home crowd with a win against 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev. Tiafoe triumphed 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 7-6 (8-6) on Louis Armstrong Stadium, marking his second career win against Medvedev. He has won all 10 of his matches on this court.
Tiafoe is scheduled to face Michelsen in the quarter-finals. The 22-year-old Michelsen reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final by defeating Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 6-4.
Ben Shelton also advanced to the quarter-finals, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in under two hours. Tsitsipas's defeat means that for the first time since 1877, no player with a one-handed backhand will reach a major men's singles semi-final.
In men's doubles, top seeds Henry Patten of Britain and Harri Heliovaara of Finland progressed to the third round. British ninth seeds Lloyd Glasspool and Julian Cash also advanced, as did the American-British pairing of Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury, who came back from a set down.
