An Alabama high school football coach has resigned from his position following an arrest on suspicion of public intoxication while attempting to scout a rival team. Jerry Fulks, who was set to begin his first season as defensive coordinator and associate head coach at Guntersville High School, was taken into custody last Friday.

Fulks, 45, was present at a football jamboree hosted by Arab High School along with other coaches from Guntersville. The group reportedly intended to analyze the team they were scheduled to open their season against, according to the Hartselle Enquirer. During the event, Fulks allegedly attempted to access the sideline by falsely identifying himself to law enforcement as a writer for the Birmingham News.

Officers on scene suspected Fulks was intoxicated and escorted him from the stadium. Following a brief investigation, authorities determined he was under the influence. After being removed from the premises, Fulks underwent a field sobriety test. He then reportedly identified himself to police and expressed concern about the incident becoming public knowledge.

Online court records indicate Fulks was processed and booked into a Marshall County jail late Friday evening. He was released on bond the following morning. Fulks also held a position as a gym teacher at Guntersville High School.

Guntersville superintendent Brad Cooper issued a statement acknowledging the school district's awareness of the situation involving a school employee. "Because this is a personnel matter, we will not comment on specific details or any actions that may be pending," Cooper stated. "As always, we take all personnel matters seriously and will handle this situation appropriately and in accordance with district policies and applicable law."

During a special meeting of the Guntersville City Board on Monday, the resignation of Fulks was accepted. A statement from the school district confirmed, "The Guntersville City Board of Education accepted Mr. Fulks' resignation during a special-called meeting this morning. Effective today, Mr. Fulks is no longer employed by Guntersville City Schools. Because this is a personnel matter, the district will not comment further regarding the circumstances surrounding his resignation."
