Adam Peaty has spoken about how fatherhood has made him more emotional, following his success in reaching the 50-meter breaststroke final at the Commonwealth Games. The 31-year-old athlete secured a spot in the final after winning his semi-final heat.

After the race, Peaty was interviewed by Olympian Laura Kenny, who commended his emotional vulnerability displayed during the previous day's 100m breaststroke final, where he finished third. During his bronze medal interview, Peaty had become tearful, referencing a family feud and stating that it had "taken its toll" but was "no fault of his own."

The origins of this conflict are reported to stem from 2024, when Peaty and his wife, Holly Ramsay, did not invite extended family members to their engagement party and wedding. Friends of Peaty's mother, Caroline, have reportedly expressed her heartbreak at not being able to watch her son compete.

Peaty acknowledged to Kenny that he had become more emotional since becoming a father. He shares a five-year-old son, George, with his ex Eirianedd Munro and is expecting a baby girl with his wife Holly. "Tell you what, it's what it's like being parents, isn't it?" Peaty said. He described his approach to dealing with setbacks, including writing down what he is doing well and what he can improve to create a "battle plan." He noted that while he "lost the battle yesterday" in the 100m final, he was focusing on the process for the 50m event. Peaty stated that the challenges increase as he approaches his fourth Olympic Games, and he aims to give people insight into these difficulties.

Peaty is now preparing to defend his men's 50m breaststroke title. He will face competition from South Africa's Michael Houlie, Australia's 100m breaststroke gold medalist Sam Williamson, and Jersey's Filip Nowacki.

On Saturday, Peaty had praised his wife Holly for her support during a challenging 24 hours following his 100m breaststroke loss. When asked about his support system, he mentioned his wife, coach, best mate, and teammates, detailing his method of writing down his thoughts to create a strategy.

He reflected on the emotional toll of his family estrangement, stating, "It's hard because I know how hard I've worked. I know the s**t I've been through, which is no fault of my own. It does take a toll."

Peaty added that he is "never afraid to show emotion" as he believes it helps create stronger individuals. He expressed that the recent results hurt because he knows he is capable of more, but acknowledged that it has been two years since he competed in heats, semifinals, and finals. He views himself as a fighter and looks forward to future opportunities, such as the Europeans in two weeks.

He also mentioned making difficult decisions in recent months to focus on his performance and ignoring online negativity. Peaty emphasized the importance of "being decent people" and stated that his wife will always be proud of him, regardless of medals, as long as he comes home.

Peaty's decision to register for the Games under the double-barrelled surname Ramsay-Peaty, with Ramsay first, is reportedly a further point of contention with his estranged family. Sources close to the family have previously commented on the perceived lack of loyalty and integrity compared to their own values, stating that "fame is but fleeting but family is forever."
