Adam Peaty has spoken about the toll his estranged family situation has taken on him after securing a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games. The reigning Olympic champion finished third behind Australia's Sam Williamson and Jersey's Filip Nowacki.
Following the race, Peaty became emotional, stating that the personal fallout has been difficult. "It's hard because I know how hard I've worked," Peaty said, his voice cracking. "I know the s**t I've been through, which is no fault of my own. It does take a toll."
The roots of the family conflict reportedly date back to 2024 when Peaty and his wife, Holly Ramsay, did not invite extended family members to their engagement party or wedding. His mother, Caroline, who was instrumental in his early training, was also reportedly not invited to Ramsay's hen party.
Peaty acknowledged the feud in a previous Instagram statement, suggesting there are "two sides to every story." The situation has continued to be a source of stress, with reports indicating that his sister Bethany, who had remained in contact, has also fallen out with Holly Ramsay.
Despite the personal challenges, Peaty expressed pride in his resilience. "I'm never afraid to show emotion. It's important because it helps create stronger people, stronger men, stronger fathers and stronger husbands," he stated. "This cycle especially, I've worked harder than ever. To get a result like that hurts because I know I'm better than that."
He reflected on the intense training regimen and the sacrifices made for the sport. "What's the point of all the 5.30am starts? What's the point of all the metres every single day? What's the point of being exhausted all the time, or missing family events because you have to train? It has to mean something."
Peaty, who is expecting his first child with his pregnant wife Holly, added, "Over the last couple of months I've had to make some hard decisions so I could focus on doing my job. I've had to ignore a lot of the rubbish people write online. Enough is enough. This goes beyond sport. It's about being decent people. We all have to do better."
Williamson won the gold medal with a time of 59.17 seconds, followed by Nowacki at 59.34 seconds, and Peaty at 59.65 seconds. Peaty indicated that he has another opportunity at the European Championships in two weeks.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of family, stating, "My wife will always be proud of me. As a father, it doesn't matter whether you come home with a gold medal, as long as you come home. That's what really matters."
