The New York Mets have hired A.J. Ellis, an 11-year Major League Baseball veteran, as their new strategy coordinator, a source confirmed to The Post. Ellis, who has served as a special assistant in the San Diego Padres' front office since 2019, is expected to significantly contribute to the team's pitching strategy, including game planning and pitch calling.

Ellis previously played under Mets manager Andy Green in 2018 with the Padres. His playing career also included stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Miami Marlins, and Philadelphia Phillies. During his time as a catcher, Ellis was known for his adept pitch-calling abilities and earned the trust of Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.

The Mets have undergone significant changes to their coaching staff in recent years. Last year, the team parted ways with pitching coach Jeremy Hefner, who later joined the Atlanta Braves, and hired Justin Willard from the Boston Red Sox. These adjustments were part of an effort to improve the team's performance following a disappointing season that saw manager Carlos Mendoza dismissed in May. Andy Green was then appointed as interim manager and subsequently received a three-year contract extension.

Further staff adjustments this past season included the departure of Jeff Albert, the director of major league hitting, along with other personnel. The team has also promoted Mariano Duncan to the major league staff.
