San Francisco 49ers General Manager John Lynch expressed surprise and concern upon learning of Aaron Donald's decision to come out of retirement and rejoin the Los Angeles Rams.
The looming presence of Donald, a perennial All-Pro defensive lineman, returning to a rival NFC West team presents a significant hurdle for the 49ers, who are scheduled to face the Rams in Australia on September 10.
"It looks like [Donald] is raring and ready to go, and that will create quite a challenge," Lynch said during an appearance on KNBR's "Murph & Markus" show. "They're a very good football team, they're very well-constructed. And our battles with them have always been great; they've clearly made themselves a better team this offseason. And so the challenge gets even bigger, but we're excited for that."
Lynch likened his reaction to the surprise the 49ers experienced when acquiring Christian McCaffrey and Trent Williams. The return of Donald is expected to amplify the difficulty for the 49ers' offensive line, an area where concerns have already been raised about the team's offseason improvements.
The timing of Donald's return, just before the regular season begins, means the 49ers will face him early in the season. Lynch acknowledged the formidable nature of Donald's presence on the Rams' defensive line, which also features Myles Garrett.
