San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident last week in Northern California, suffering injuries that are not life-threatening, the team announced Saturday.

Shanahan sustained a broken nose and three broken ribs, in addition to injuries to one of his hands and requiring over 40 stitches to his face. He was transported to a local hospital and released later the same day. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the collision on July 14 was not injured, according to reports.

Shanahan, 46, will participate in team activities on a limited basis as he recovers. Assistant head coach Chris Foerster is expected to assume some of Shanahan's head coaching duties during his recovery period.

"Coach Shanahan and the 49ers organization would like to sincerely thank all first responders involved for their efforts and care," the team said in a statement. Shanahan has been the head coach of the 49ers since 2017 and has led the team to two Super Bowl appearances.

The 49ers' training camp is scheduled to begin Sunday.
