A newly identified monkey species, characterized by its pinkish-orange lips and black face, has been confirmed by scientists. The primate was found in the dense tropical forests of Lomami National Park, located in the central eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Conservationists first observed the monkey in 2008. However, it was not until a decade later, in 2018, that an international team embarked on a mission to locate and study the animal. The discovery is considered a significant find, highlighting the ongoing exploration of the natural world.
"This is an amazing discovery, and it shows there is still a lot out there in the natural world that needs to be explored," said Dr. Karen Laurenson, Africa director at the Frankfurt Zoological Society. The species was found hidden within the high tree canopy of the national park's forests.
The confirmation of the new species underscores the biodiversity present in the region and the importance of continued scientific exploration and conservation efforts.
