Howard, a sand tiger shark at the National Marine Aquarium (NMA) in Plymouth, has died. Aquarium staff noticed changes in Howard's behavior and condition, and she was humanely euthanized after not responding to medical treatment.
Howard lived in the aquarium's Great Barrier Reef habitat before moving to the Atlantic Ocean habitat, where she grew to 9 feet long. She was believed to be nearly 30 years old.
Aquarium staff described Howard as an "incredible ambassador" who helped to dispel common myths and misconceptions surrounding sand tiger sharks, a critically endangered species.
