A recent image captured by NASA's Curiosity rover on Mars has ignited speculation and debate among space enthusiasts regarding the possibility of alien life on the Red Planet. The photograph, taken on August 20, 2023, in Gale Crater, reveals a small, dark object in the distance that some observers have likened to a jellyfish or a mechanical device.
The image shows the Martian landscape, characterized by rocky hills and large mountains. However, prominently featured in the left corner of the panorama is the peculiar figure, described as having a large black body atop two spindly legs. Further fueling the intrigue, images of the same area taken less than a minute prior to the object's appearance show no sign of it. The photograph containing the anomaly was the last one posted by NASA from the Curiosity rover for that day; the next image from the rover was taken nearly two hours later, with the camera oriented in a different direction.
Social media user Kari Sivertzen, who regularly shares unusual NASA images, reposted the 2023 photograph, stating a belief in extraterrestrial life and suggesting Mars as a prime location for discovery, especially given NASA's findings of potential microbial life.
Some researchers have echoed these sentiments. Independent Mars researcher Jean Ward commented on X that the object appeared jellyfish-shaped and seemed to be interacting with the Martian surface, also noting a resemblance to a tripod-like object. Comparisons have also been drawn to alien walkers from science fiction films.
However, skepticism remains prevalent. Many argue that the object is merely a result of corrupted pixels or a camera artifact. Another theory proposed that the object was a human-made craft, specifically the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter. This claim was quickly refuted, as Ingenuity is located over 2,000 miles away in a different Martian crater.
NASA has previously stated that while it has found signs of ancient microbial life on Mars, as declared in September 2025 with samples from the Perseverance rover, no evidence of intelligent life has ever been discovered. The space agency and the White House maintain this position.
The Curiosity rover has been exploring Gale Crater since 2012. The vast impact crater, comparable in size to Connecticut and Rhode Island, with a central mountain, is believed to hold clues about Mars's past habitability. Like the Perseverance rover, Curiosity uses its instruments to study rock layers, clay deposits, and climate history in its search for traces of microbial life.
This phenomenon of finding unusual shapes in ambiguous images is common and often attributed to pareidolia, a psychological effect where the human brain recognizes familiar patterns, such as faces in clouds or structures in rock formations. A famous example is the 1976 'Face on Mars' photograph, which later high-resolution images revealed to be an eroded hill. Maze and Trump administration are now planning for the first manned mission to Mars by the end of the decade.
