The July full moon, also referred to as the Buck Moon, illuminated the night skies over Devon and Cornwall on Tuesday evening. This celestial event is named for the time of year when male deer, or bucks, experience rapid growth of new antlers.
The full moon was expected to reach its peak illumination at 3:36 PM BST on Wednesday. Meteorologists predicted clear skies after dark, offering favorable viewing conditions for those hoping to observe the moon on Wednesday night.
Historically, the moon has also been called the Thunder Moon by the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, a reference to the common summer thunderstorms during July. It is also known as the Hay Moon, reflecting the traditional hay harvest that takes place in July.
Amateur weather observers in Devon and Cornwall managed to capture images of the moon on Tuesday night.
