Videos circulating online have documented birds exhibiting a state of confusion during a recent solar eclipse, with many displaying erratic flight patterns or falling silent as the sun was obscured by the moon. The celestial event, which caused daylight to dim significantly across parts of the country, prompted widespread observation of the avian reactions.
Viewers shared footage of large flocks flying chaotically through the air as the sky darkened, while other clips showed animals becoming eerily quiet. These scenes led many to speculate whether the birds were aware of the extraordinary astronomical event unfolding above them.
"The birds knew something was happening," one social media user commented after sharing footage of birds flying in random patterns. Another asked, "Has anyone noticed the birds acting strangely?" while a third reported a "massive flock of crows" appearing suddenly in the sky.
Experts suggest that these reactions are likely due to the birds' acute sensitivity to light and temperature changes, which they use to regulate their daily activities. During the eclipse, the moon blocked over 90 percent of the sun's light in some areas, creating a rapid and dramatic shift in ambient conditions. Dr. Kristina Paradowski, a clinical assistant professor at Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, noted that some animals, like birds, rely heavily on light cues. To them, the sudden disappearance of the sun can resemble the onset of night.
This phenomenon has been observed in previous eclipses. A study published in the journal Science indicated that more than half of wild bird species altered their behavior during the 2024 solar eclipse. Researchers found that many birds reacted to the sudden darkness as if night had fallen. Some even initiated dawn choruses immediately after the eclipse, despite the brief period of darkness. These findings underscore how the rapid change in light can temporarily disrupt the normal biological rhythms of birds.
