Videos circulating online have captured birds reacting with apparent confusion during a recent solar eclipse, with some flocks exhibiting chaotic flight patterns while others fell silent as the sun was obscured.
The unusual behavior led many observers to question whether the animals recognized the significance of the astronomical event. Social media users shared footage of birds flying erratically and noted the sudden appearance of large crow flocks. Others reported an eerie quietness descending during the peak of the eclipse.
"The birds knew something was happening," one user commented, accompanying a video of birds flying in random aerial formations. Another inquired, "Has anyone noticed the birds acting strangely?" while a third observed a "massive flock of crows" appearing unexpectedly.
Experts suggest that these reactions are primarily linked to the birds' acute sensitivity to light and temperature fluctuations, which they use to regulate their daily activities. During the eclipse, the moon's passage across the sun significantly reduced daylight and, in some areas, caused a noticeable drop in temperature.
Dr. Kristina Paradowski, a clinical assistant professor at the Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, explained that animals like birds, which rely heavily on light cues, are particularly affected. To them, the sudden dimming of the sun can be akin to the onset of night.
Previous research has corroborated these observations. A study published in the journal Science indicated that over half of wild bird species altered their behavior during the 2024 solar eclipse. Many birds responded to the sudden darkness as if night had fallen, with some even initiating a dawn chorus despite the temporary nature of the event. These findings highlight how rapid changes in light can temporarily disrupt birds' natural biological rhythms.
