Six Drinks That May Help Prevent and Reverse Liver Damage

More than 100 million Americans are affected by some form of liver disease, with fatty liver disease and cirrhosis being the most common. While alcohol and sugary drinks are known contributors to liver damage, certain beverages may offer protective benefits, according to dietitians.

Coffee

Plain coffee, without added sugars or syrups, contains plant compounds that can reduce inflammation and slow the progression of liver scarring. A 2026 study analyzing data from over 350,000 adults found that consuming more than five cups of coffee daily was associated with a significantly lower risk of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver-related death. Researchers noted that both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee showed protective effects, suggesting that compounds like chlorogenic acid and kahweol, rather than caffeine, might be responsible for reducing liver fat and inflammation. Another 2021 study linked drinking two or more cups of coffee daily to a lower risk of chronic liver disease and liver cancer.

Dietitians recommend opting for unsweetened coffee and suggest adding cinnamon, ginger, or turmeric to enhance its anti-inflammatory properties.

Herbal Teas

Herbal teas, including green tea, lemon ginger, and turmeric tea, can help reduce inflammation and support detoxification processes in the liver. A 2020 review indicated that regular green tea consumption lowered liver enzymes AST and ALT in individuals with fatty liver disease, although no significant changes were observed in those without the condition. A 2026 study on mice suggested that a combination of lemon and ginger oil could reduce ALT levels by decreasing inflammation. Milk thistle tea, containing the antioxidant silymarin, is also thought to promote protein synthesis, potentially aiding in the regeneration of damaged liver cells. However, experts caution against high-dose green tea supplements, which have been linked to rare cases of liver injury.

Beetroot and Grapefruit Juice

Beetroot juice is rich in dietary nitrates, which convert to nitric oxide to improve blood flow and reduce liver inflammation. The antioxidants betalains and betaine in beetroot juice can protect liver cells and prevent fat accumulation. A 2023 study showed that adults with fatty liver disease who consumed beetroot juice alongside a Mediterranean diet experienced significant reductions in liver fat, improved liver enzymes, and better triglyceride and cholesterol levels. Grapefruit juice contains the antioxidant naringin, which lab studies suggest may protect liver cells from alcohol-induced damage.

Chia Seed Water

Chia seeds, when added to water, can enhance hydration and provide dietary fiber, which promotes healthy digestion and reduces the liver's workload. Each two-tablespoon serving of chia seeds contains 10 grams of fiber, aiding regular bowel movements and preventing toxins from lingering in the gut and potentially reaching the liver. A small clinical trial found that daily consumption of milled chia seeds improved fatty liver disease and reduced blood fat levels in over half of the participants. Research in mice also indicated that chia seeds helped lower liver inflammation in those with high cholesterol.

Infused Water

Infusing water with ingredients like lemon, lime, cucumber, or mint can provide antioxidants that protect the liver from oxidative damage. These additions are also rich in vitamin C, which has been shown to lower liver enzymes like AST and ALT in patients with fatty liver disease. A 2021 clinical trial found that daily vitamin C supplementation improved insulin resistance, a factor linked to reduced fat accumulation in the liver. Furthermore, flavored water can encourage overall hydration, which is essential for optimal blood flow and efficient waste filtering by the liver.

Electrolyte mixes containing sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium can further aid in hydrating liver cells.
