Mandi Masterpole, a student who was one of 16 million Americans taking ADHD medications, is speaking out about the potentially devastating risks associated with these drugs. Masterpole began abusing Adderall and Ritalin at age 17, initially enjoying their ability to keep her awake and alert for schoolwork while also allowing her to socialize and party.
However, her use escalated, and combined with mismanaged diabetes, it severely weakened her heart. The Daily Mail reports that her heart stopped twice, leading to the implantation of an LVAD, a mechanical pump that supports a failing heart, to keep her alive. She remains on the heart transplant waitlist.
"I would tell people to steer clear of these drugs completely. It's not worth it," Masterpole, now 34, stated. "It may make you feel good but it's going to tear everything apart."
Masterpole's story highlights the severe health consequences that can arise from the misuse of prescription stimulant medications, which are commonly prescribed for ADHD.
