Partner's Poor Sleep May Influence Your Diet, Study Finds
Researchers discovered that the impact of insufficient sleep on healthy eating habits can extend to a partner, particularly in couples where one individual is overweight or obese and attempting dietary changes.
A recent study suggests that a partner's poor sleep habits can negatively influence your own dietary choices and adherence to healthy eating goals. The research indicates that this effect can ripple through couples, impacting eating behaviors even for the well-rested partner.
The findings, published in the journal Annals of Behavioural Medicine, involved 204 couples in Canada, with an average age of 42. At least one person in each couple was overweight or obese and actively trying to improve their diet or physical activity.
Participants provided data on their sleep and diet at the beginning of the study, after one month, and again after three months. For the initial 14 days, they also maintained a diary to track their efforts toward healthy eating.
Results showed a clear link between poor sleep and a reduced capacity to stick to healthy eating goals. Individuals who reported sleeping poorly also indicated making less effort to maintain healthy habits. Notably, partners of poor sleepers reported lower confidence and less effort in their own healthy eating endeavors, irrespective of their own sleep quality.
While women generally reported healthier diets and eating intentions compared to men, gender did not alter the observed relationship between one partner's sleep and the other's diet-related behaviors.
Professor Jean-Philippe Gouin, the study's corresponding author and a psychologist at Concordia University in Montreal, emphasized the importance of considering the social context of eating habits. He suggested that partners can influence each other's food choices, intentionally or unintentionally. Gouin recommended that for lasting dietary changes, couples should collaborate to modify their home and food environment, thereby making healthier habits more sustainable over time.
