Melatonin Use Linked to Terrifying Nightmares and Sleep Disturbances, Experts Warn

Millions of Americans turn to melatonin for sleep, but the popular supplement may be causing more harm than good, leading to disturbing nightmares and altered sleep patterns. Health experts are warning about the potential side effects of this widely used sleep aid.

James Nardell, a 49-year-old affiliate manager living in Bangkok, described experiencing terrifying, vivid nightmares after taking melatonin, jolting awake in a state of panic. These experiences highlight a growing concern among health professionals regarding the drug's impact on sleep quality and mental well-being.

The use of melatonin supplements has surged in recent years. A study indicated that the number of Americans using melatonin increased fourfold between 2009 and 2018, with over two percent of respondents reporting use in 2017 or 2018. This widespread adoption has amplified concerns about its potential adverse effects.

Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the body to regulate the sleep-wake cycle. However, supplements often contain significantly higher doses than naturally produced. Typical doses for melatonin supplements range from 1mg to 5mg, usually taken about 30 minutes before bedtime. Despite its common use, the exact mechanisms by which supplemental melatonin affects sleep architecture, particularly REM sleep where dreaming occurs, are still being researched.

Experts suggest that the intensity of dreams and nightmares reported by users could be linked to melatonin's influence on the stages of sleep. While the sleep cycle typically lasts about nine hours on average and repeats throughout the night, supplemental melatonin might alter the balance between these stages, potentially leading to more vivid or disturbing dream experiences.

For individuals experiencing poor sleep despite taking melatonin, increasing the dosage may not be the solution. Some experts advise exploring other strategies or consulting a healthcare professional to determine the root cause of sleep difficulties and to discuss safer, more effective alternatives.
