Melatonin May Offer Pain Relief for Arthritis and Back Pain Sufferers, Study Suggests
A common sleep supplement shows potential for reducing pain intensity in individuals with chronic musculoskeletal conditions.

A common sleep aid, melatonin, may provide relief for individuals suffering from chronic pain, particularly those with arthritis and back pain, according to a recent study.
Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the body to regulate sleep-wake cycles and is widely available as an over-the-counter supplement. The new research analyzed 23 clinical trials involving over 2,000 participants to assess melatonin's effectiveness in managing pain and improving sleep, noting the strong connection between the two.
Poor sleep can exacerbate pain, creating a cycle that melatonin may help break. The study, published in The Journal of the International Association for the Study of Pain, included participants with chronic pain conditions such as lower back pain, osteoarthritis, and fibromyalgia, as well as those recovering from surgeries like joint replacements and spinal procedures.
Participants in the analyzed trials were randomly assigned to receive melatonin, a placebo, or other pain treatments like ibuprofen. Researchers measured pain intensity using numerical scales, consolidating data onto a zero to 100 scale for comparison. The findings indicated that melatonin reduced pain by an average of nine points on this scale, a reduction comparable to that seen with conventional painkillers.
In addition to pain relief, the supplement also improved sleep quality, reinforcing the known link between sleep and pain management. The study's lead author, Kangchao Wu, stated that for many patients, pain is intertwined with poor sleep, and melatonin appears to address both aspects.
Dosage and timing of melatonin varied across the trials. Individuals with chronic musculoskeletal pain typically took around 3mg per day, while those recovering from surgery received double that dose, with melatonin consistently administered at night, about an hour before sleep.
While the research suggests melatonin's potential benefits, the authors concluded that a universal dosage does not fit all patients. They recommended that individuals experiencing chronic pain should consult with their doctor to discuss the potential use of melatonin.
Traditional approaches to chronic pain management often involve over-the-counter analgesics or opioids. However, prolonged use of these medications can lead to adverse effects such as reduced fertility, impaired immune function, and an increased risk of fractures. Melatonin offers a potential alternative or complementary treatment, particularly for those whose pain is linked to sleep disturbances. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends adults aim for approximately seven hours of sleep per night for optimal recovery and health, a period during which the body's cells, including those that regulate pain responses, undergo repair.
