Air Pollution Linked to Increased Risk of Glaucoma and Cataracts, Study Suggests
New research indicates that prolonged exposure to air pollutants may accelerate the development of two common age-related eye conditions.
Individuals residing in areas with elevated levels of air pollution face a higher likelihood of developing glaucoma and cataracts, according to a comprehensive study analyzing data from millions of people.
While the detrimental effects of polluted air on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems are well-established, this research suggests a connection to eye health, specifically age-related conditions.
The study synthesized findings from 41 distinct studies, incorporating data from a vast number of participants across the UK and East Asia. Researchers examined the impact of various air pollutants, including fine particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, ozone, and carbon monoxide, on the incidence of glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration.
Key findings revealed a correlation between higher concentrations of fine particulate matter—tiny particles originating from smoke, vehicle exhaust, and industrial emissions that can penetrate deep into the body—and an increased risk of glaucoma. Glaucoma, a condition characterized by damage to the optic nerve, can lead to irreversible vision loss if not detected and managed early. It affects a significant portion of the population, with approximately one million people in the UK impacted.
Those living in the most polluted environments exhibited up to a 70% greater chance of developing glaucoma compared to individuals in areas with the lowest pollution levels.
Furthermore, the research indicated a consistent association between increased air pollution exposure and a higher risk of developing cataracts. Cataracts occur when the eye's lens becomes cloudy, impairing vision and potentially causing blindness in severe cases. The study found that the risk escalated in tandem with exposure levels to air pollutants.
Currently, about one in every three individuals over the age of 65 in the UK is affected by cataracts.
Dr. Ahmed Alnabihi, who presented the research at the Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, commented on the findings. 'Every day we see patients losing vision to conditions such as glaucoma and cataract,' he stated. 'These diseases are labelled as age-related, as though ageing is the only culprit, but that always felt incomplete to me.'
Dr. Alnabihi, affiliated with King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Saudi Arabia, suggested that environmental factors could be playing a significant role. 'If something environmental is accelerating these conditions, that changes our thinking and suggests we could take action to reduce the risks,' he added, implying that mitigating pollution could be a strategy to lower the incidence of these eye conditions.
