Individuals residing in areas with higher concentrations of air pollution face a greater risk of developing glaucoma and cataracts, according to a recent study that analyzed data from millions of people.

While the detrimental effects of air pollution on cardiovascular and respiratory health are well-established, this research indicates a potential link to serious eye conditions as well. The study examined findings from 41 separate investigations, incorporating data from the United Kingdom and across East Asia. Researchers assessed levels of various air pollutants, including particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, ozone, and carbon monoxide, in relation to the incidence of glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration.

Fine particulate matter, microscopic particles found in smoke, vehicle exhaust, and industrial emissions that can infiltrate deep into the body, was found to be directly correlated with an increased risk of glaucoma. Glaucoma, a condition characterized by damage to the optic nerve connecting the eye to the brain, can lead to irreversible vision loss if not detected and treated promptly. In the UK, it affects up to one million people.

The findings revealed that individuals living in the most polluted environments had up to a 70% higher probability of developing glaucoma compared to those in areas with the lowest pollution levels.

Furthermore, people exposed to more polluted air consistently demonstrated a higher risk of developing cataracts. Cataracts occur when the eye's lens becomes cloudy, impairing vision and potentially leading to blindness in severe cases. The study indicated that the risk associated with cataracts escalates with increased exposure to pollution.

Approximately one in three individuals over the age of 65 in the UK currently experience cataracts. Dr. Ahmed Al Nabihi, who presented the research at the Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, noted that these diseases are often categorized as age-related, but he believes environmental factors may play a significant role in their development. Dr. Al Nabihi, affiliated with King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Saudi Arabia, suggested that identifying environmental accelerators for these conditions could lead to new preventative strategies.
