Wolfgang Tillmans Recognized on TIME's 2026 Most Influential Art List
The German photographer is honored for his pioneering work in capturing LGBTQIA+ life and abstract chemical prints.
Wolfgang Tillmans, a photographer known for pushing artistic boundaries, has been named to TIME's 2026 list of the 100 most influential people in art. The German artist was recognized for his early and impactful work documenting LGBTQIA+ individuals and communities, contributing to the destigmatization of queer life during the AIDS crisis.
Tillmans also pioneered a distinctive style of colorful abstract chemical prints that have achieved significant commercial success, with some works fetching over $750,000 at auction. His influence extends beyond fine art, with his images appearing on more than 50 book and album covers, including Frank Ocean's "Blonde."
In 2000, Tillmans became the first photographer and the first non-British artist to win the prestigious Turner Prize. His commitment to social causes is evident through his Between Bridges foundation, established in 2017, which supports LGBTQIA+ rights and anti-racist activism.
His recent critical acclaim includes a major survey exhibition at the Pompidou in Paris, titled “Nothing Could Have Prepared Us—Everything Could Have Prepared Us,” which concluded in 2025. In September, he opened a solo exhibition at Galerie Chantal Crousel in Paris and is participating in two significant international biennials. In May, Tillmans was awarded the Roswitha Haftmann Prize, Europe's largest monetary art prize, valued at $185,000, further solidifying his status as a prominent contemporary photographer.
