In a surprising turn of events in the latest episode of HBO's "House of the Dragon," Tyland Lannister, portrayed by Jefferson Hall, has survived the brutal Battle of the Gullet. This marks a notable departure from the established narrative in George R.R. Martin's "Fire & Blood."
Following his apparent demise after being thrown overboard by Sharako Lohar, Tyland has made his way to Rook's Rest. There, he encounters Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) and a dejected Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney). Tyland is depicted as the sole individual aware of the Crown's hidden gold.
Within Rook's Rest, Janos, the de facto ruler, discovers Aegon's crown, inadvertently revealing his identity as king. In the ensuing confrontation, Aegon kills Janos. The fate of this new trio remains uncertain, as differing opinions arise regarding their next move. Larys advocates for hiring a ship to reach the safety of Braavos, while Tyland suggests heading to Lannisport. The book "Fire & Blood" indicates that Aegon and Larys eventually journey to Dragonstone without Tyland.
The events in the show diverge significantly from Tyland's storyline in Martin's novel. In "Fire & Blood," Tyland remains in King's Landing when Rhaenyra seizes control. He endures torture by the Blacks in an effort to reveal the location of the Crown's gold but remains tight-lipped. Upon his eventual release, he is described as blind, castrated, and severely maimed. Despite his injuries, he retains his faculties and later serves as Hand to the young King Aegon III, earning the moniker "The Hooded Hand" due to his need to wear a silk hood at court. It is currently unclear if "House of the Dragon" will adhere to this more brutal book trajectory for Tyland.
