Tom Cruise is undertaking a significant transformation for his role in Alejandro Iñárritu's forthcoming film, "Digger." Warner Bros. released the first trailer for the highly anticipated movie on Monday, offering a glimpse of the 64-year-old actor in a departure from his recent blockbuster roles.

In "Digger," Cruise portrays Digger Rockwell, an eccentric oil magnate whose decisions place the world on the verge of disaster. The official synopsis indicates that his character embarks on a mission to prove himself "humanity's hero before the disaster he's unleashed destroys everything."

The trailer begins with Rockwell appearing concerned about his cat before confronting an employee about a massive project. It becomes clear that this venture carries the potential for an $18 trillion catastrophe.

Cruise's appearance in the trailer has drawn considerable attention on social media, with many users noting his dramatically altered look. The film marks Cruise's first starring role outside of the "Top Gun" and "Mission: Impossible" franchises in several years.

"Digger" is directed by Oscar winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu, known for films such as "Birdman" and "The Revenant." The film is scheduled for release on October 2.

Cruise initially presented the trailer during a Q&A event in Los Angeles last week. He spoke about the ambitious nature of the project and his creative collaboration with Iñárritu, stating, "I have never had something that could challenge me in this way and neither has Alejandro when we went in, ever. And when you see this film, it's totally original."

The ensemble cast for "Digger" includes Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Emma D'Arcy, Michael Stuhlbarg, and John Goodman.

Ahead of the trailer's debut, Cruise also expanded his social media presence by joining TikTok, where he has quickly gained over 1.4 million followers.
