Stephanie Cole, Acclaimed British Actress, Dies at 84

Actress Stephanie Cole, celebrated for her extensive career on British television and stage, has died at the age of 84. Her agent confirmed her passing on Friday, stating she had been living with Alzheimer's disease for several years.

Cole was a familiar face on British screens, with a career spanning decades. She is perhaps best remembered for her role as Mrs. Delphine Featherstone, affectionately known as 'The Black Widow,' in the iconic sitcom 'Open All Hours' and its sequel, 'Still Open All Hours.' She appeared in multiple episodes of both series, continuing her comedic sparring with the character Granville.

Her role as Roy Cropper's cantankerous mother, Sylvia, in the long-running soap opera 'Coronation Street' also garnered significant attention. Cole won Best Comedy Performance at the 2012 British Soap Awards for this part.

Cole's diverse career also included roles in 'Tenko,' 'A Bit of a Do,' 'Keeping Mum,' and 'Man Down.' She starred in the BBC sitcom 'The Cleaner' in 2021 and appeared in two series of the period drama 'Gentleman Jack,' which concluded in 2022.

In recognition of her contributions to acting, Cole was awarded an OBE in the 2005 Queen's Birthday Honours. She also received the Best TV Actress award at the 1992 British Comedy Awards for her role in 'Waiting For God.'

Cole began her acting journey on stage at 17. She was married to flight director Henry Marshall, with whom she had a daughter, and later married actor Peter Birrell.

She was known to advocate for older actors, expressing frustration in a 2019 interview with what she perceived as outdated practices at the BBC concerning direction for experienced performers.
