Netflix's Zulu-language series "The Polygamist" has become a global talking point, drawing international attention to polygamy and infidelity within South African society. The show delves into complex social issues, highlighting what viewers describe as normalized ills in the country.

Letlhogonolo Mogale, a viewer who binged the series shortly after its release, characterized the show's central character, Jonasi, as a "serial cheater" and an "opportunist." While not from a polygamist family herself, Mogale found the storyline resonated deeply, reflecting what she described as "broken families and a broken society."

Polygamy is legally recognized in South Africa and is a traditional practice within several cultures, including Zulu and Xhosa. In these contexts, it is common for a man to have multiple wives, who are typically established in their own households. While co-wives often cooperate in child-rearing, the show portrays a more contentious dynamic, particularly in urban settings.

Mogale pointed to the portrayal of Jonasi and his eldest daughter, Mpume, as particularly striking. Jonasi has six children with three different women and is closest to Mpume. The series depicts Mpume as a "Daddy's Girl" who, as a teenager, attempts to confront her father about his deceit and unfaithfulness. His reaction – turning up the television volume to ignore her – was described as stunning by viewers.

"The Polygamist" does not shy away from other sensitive topics, including sexually transmitted diseases, gender-based violence, and the resulting trauma experienced by families. A controversial plotline also addresses HIV, a virus that affects approximately 13% of South Africa's population. The show's exploration of polygamous unions has divided opinions, with many highlighting the inherent risks faced by families in such arrangements.

The series is produced by Stained Glass TV, co-founded by Gugu Zuma-Ncube. According to Zuma-Ncube, elements of the show are drawn directly from personal experiences and family history. "A lot of the scenes that you see in the show are taken directly out of our lives. I famously come from a very polygamist family… [so] I brought that in," she stated.
