Shirley MacLaine, 92, was seen in Malibu on Friday, marking her first public appearance since the death of her "Steel Magnolias" co-star Dolly Parton. Parton died on Tuesday at age 80 following a brief battle with cancer.
MacLaine was dressed casually in sweatpants and a T-shirt, accessorized with gold jewelry. Her white-grey hair was styled in a pixie cut, and she appeared to be wearing light makeup.
In the wake of Parton's death, MacLaine shared a statement with People, saying, "God sent her to us, and she has returned home."
"Steel Magnolias," released in 1989, follows a group of women in the South who support each other through life's challenges. Parton played hairstylist Truvy Jones in the film, while MacLaine portrayed one of the main characters. The cast also included Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, Tom Skerritt, and Sam Shepard.
Following the announcement of Parton's death by her nephew Bryan Seaver, Sally Field took to Instagram to post a photo of the "Steel Magnolias" cast from the late 1980s. Field, 79, wrote, "If there are truly angels on earth, then we have just lost one. Dolly Parton. There will never be another. I adored her with all my heart and will always cherish our time together. Forever. Rest in peace beautiful Dolly."
Parton's death was confirmed in a video posted by Seaver, who had served as her head of security. According to TMZ, she had been admitted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville with autoimmune and kidney problems. Seaver stated in the video that his aunt had "lived in the light" and was now "in the arms of Jesus."
Parton, known for hits like "Jolene" and "9 to 5," had a music career spanning six decades. Her passing followed months of health issues that led to the cancellation of several public appearances. Four days before her death, she had expressed to People magazine her desire to achieve "so many things," including launching a new hotel and museum in Nashville.
